Saint Michael's Mount
Item #012, #013
This picturesque stark
mount in the bay named after it at Marazion on Cornwall's south
coast is in many ways a twin to Mont Saint Michel in Brittany (another
Celtic nation) France. Legend says that hundreds of years
ago Saint Michael appeared to fishermen mending their nets here.
A chapel was built and eventually a castle which is described as
'in all respects in such harmony with the rock upon which it stands
as almost seems a natural part of it'.
For centuries it has
been the home of the St Aubyn family. The current modest Lord
St Leven, despite his 'middle' name, would deny any such role designation
as saint; nevertheless he is cherished for the dedication with which
he campaigns for the preservation and betterment of Cornwall. He
serves on numerous councils and committees. He and Lady St. Leven
often open their special home for charitable causes and give significant
time and energy to Cornwall's advancement.
