Beyond the Pasty:
Cornwall Today
An introduction to the quaint and the current: a travel guide to
help you see Cornwall in depth. Beyond pasties and cream teas with
saffron bread, beyond its majestic coast, its gale-bent trees and
Arthurian legends, beyond Jamaica Inn tourism there is a distinct
Celtic nation insisting that it will keep its language and culture,
its sense of the spiritual and its generally unspoken Celtic values.
The fiercely independent Cornish spirit struggles to revive
some would say resurrect its economy and reduce its staggering
unemployment and under-employment rate. A new maritime museum, an
outpost of the Tate Gallery, the new Combined University of Cornwall,
and the breathtaking Eden project are a few markers of the energetic
renewal.
Will they follow Scotland
toward devolution? Will they copy Wales by reclaiming their heritage
through reclaiming their language? Will they challenge Ireland by
expanding education and luring high-tech companies? And what part
might the arts play in all this?
If you were part of the
planning committee, what ideas would you offer? Toward the end of
her program, Sue welcomes creative suggestions to pass along.
